Medical Office Careers

August 25th, 2008

Most people don’t realize they could work in the medical field without going to medical school for years and years.

Medical office professionals play a critical role in the operation of doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other health care facilities. SBBCollege has an accredited program that can prepare you for this exciting career in a matter of months!

But let’s back up a bit. Since many people don’t know exactly what is involved with a medical office career, we’ve assembled some of the more common questions and answers for you here…

So what exactly is involved in medical office career?

Medical office professionals keep healthcare offices running efficiently. They must also be familiar with insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital or laboratory procedures.

What are standard medical office duties?

Medical office professionals perform many duties. They update and file patients’ medical records, fill out insurance forms, and arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services. They also perform tasks less specific to medical settings, such as billing and bookkeeping, answering telephones, greeting patients, handling correspondence, and scheduling appointments.

What training do I need to work in medical office administration?

Most medical office hiring managers look for experience or specialized training. Training may include courses in medical terminology, medical office procedures, records and database management, or medical coding. Colleges, such as SBBCollege, grant Associate degrees or certificates in medical administration training.

What about the SBBCollege Medical Office Systems Program Online?

SBBC is an accredited community college offering a first-rate medical office systems program that prepares candidates for work in medical offices and insurance companies. Training includes medical billing, medical terminology, diagnostic coding, prescription drugs and their side effects, computer use and medical computer programs.

The SBBCollege Program also includes an on-the-job training component in the last term. As training for medical office jobs goes, this is a great opportunity for those looking to obtain or advance in an entry level job in the medical billing field. More…

What is the job outlook for medical office administrators?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost 400,000 people were employed as medical office professionals in 2004 and employment in this field is expected to grow 21-35% from 2002-2012. While the number of general administrative assistant jobs is projected to decline, the need for medical administrative workers is expected to continue into the next decade.

Criminal Justice: Growing Fast!

August 25th, 2008

Did you know that one of the fastest growing fields in the nation involves criminal justice?

As stated in an article in the Los Angeles Times, the U.S. Bureau of Labor predicts that correctional officer positions will increase 16% through 2016. This will add 82,000 jobs to the national work force.

Based on the article, there is a growing demand for correctionl officers! And better yet, these positions are quite attractive-as correctional officers receive great financial benefits and retirement packages, and have a diversity of career paths and opportunities for promotion.

Why SBBC? Why right now?

August 25th, 2008

Why did you choose SBBC?

Many liked SBBCollege better than a community college.

“The main reason I chose SBBCollege was because it takes less time than a community college. It has fewer students in each class, so that means more one-on-one with my instructors. SBBCollege also provides tutors free of charge for any subject we need help on. That tells us that this school tries their best to try to get everyone to graduate, and for me that’s very important.”

Why right now?

One student wanted a career, not just a job…

“I am attending college right now because I needed to get in school and work towards a career. I didn’t want just a simple low paying job for the rest of my life. I needed an actual career. Coming from a family that wasn’t well off financially, I wanted a change. I wanted a goal, a career and a degree. Most importantly a real big sense of accomplishment.”

Another student also wanted something more…

“I started working at a fast food restaurant for a while. I didn’t make enough money there to pay my bills and provide for my baby. So I tried applying everywhere else, but nobody would call me back. That’s when I realized that I wasn’t going to make it without my education. I heard a radio ad about SBBCollege, and that’s when I decided to change the way I live my life…so I can give my family a better life.”

A new student didn’t really know what she wanted to do, but knew she was interested in business…

“I have always been interested in business, so I started looking into schools. I was about to give up when I heard a radio commercial about Santa Barbara Business College. That commercial had me really interested because I like the setting and small class sizes of vocational schools. I came in for an interview and two weeks later I started school. I really love it here so far.”

Now it’s your turn to get started!

Many students, like Deborah, appreciate SBBC’s supportive environment…

“I am so impressed with the quality of the teachers, and my experience thus far has been extremely exciting. The teachers are very helpful, and I sense the teachers want me to succeed just as much as I want to succeed.”
Deborah M. - Medical Assistant

Necessary skills with hands-on training…

“The Pharmacy Technician Program gave me the necessary skills to obtain my goals for the future. Now I am a graduate from SBBCollege with hands-on training and am working for a pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.”
Ryan T. - Pharmacy Technician

And for those, um, “more experienced” students…

“I was a little afraid of going back to school at my age but thanks to such fantastic help from the staff here at SBBC, I have succeeded!”
Kellie R. - Criminal Justice

“I am 37 years old and…at first, I thought, this is crazy! I don’t know how to be a student anymore..but…I was wrong. With the support of staff, faculty and administration at SBBC, I was able to accomplish completion of my program. It seemed a little challenging at first, the fact that I had to be disciplined and come to class everyday, but as time went by, it got easier and easier.”
Nancy T. - Paralegal Studies
